La Coruña
A Coruña (in Galician A Coruña, in Spanish La Coruña, historically in English Corunna) is a province of extreme northwestern Spain, in the northwestern part of the autonomous community of Galicia. It is bordered by the province of Lugo to the east and Pontevedra to the south, and by the Atlantic Ocean to the west and the Bay of Biscay to the north.

Name variants and historical references
In English texts, the name is sometimes written as Corunna.

In the Peninsular War, Sir John Moore headed a 30,000-strong British force, which attacked Napoleon near Burgos, but they were soon forced into a long retreat chased by the French, ending in an evacuation from A Coruña in January 1809 in the Battle of Corunna (also known by its many varients and as the "Battle of Elviña". Moore was killed by a cannon shot while directing the defence of the town. His burial inspired a well-known poem.

Much later, histories of the Spanish civil war describe the Battle of the La Corunna Road.

The name is sometimes Coruna, notably when describing the football team 'Deportivo de La Coruña'. In this context, it should be noted that the "Deportivo de la Coruña" is not the team of the province but the team of the City of A Coruña.

The name La Coruña isn´t officially now; and the Royal Spanish Academy of the spanish language says that the correct form in spanish is A Coruña.

Geography and Population
The province's population was 1,126,064 in 2002 It has an area of 7,876 km². The population density is approximately 142.97/km². Its capital is the city of A Coruña, which contains slightly more than one-fifth (243,349) of the population of the province. Other major cities in the province include the capital of the autonomous community, Santiago de Compostela, with a population 92,919, and Ferrol, population 77,859. See also the list of municipalities in A Coruña.

The province is home to the Aeropuerto de Lavacolla in Santiago de Compostela (i.e.: the Capital of Galicia) and the Aeropuerto de Alvedro in the city of A Coruña (i.e.: the Capital of the Province of A Coruña).
